In 2004 two Unison members produced a film about the life of the Holocaust Survivor Arek Hersh simply entitled ‘Arek’. Directed by Tony Lloyd it was filmed across Poland and the Czech Republic following the harrowing story of a young Jewish boy surviving the Nazi persecution. Arek confronts the past on film, telling his story in the killing fields of Auschwitz and Chelmno and reflecting bitterly on the destruction of his family, his community and his Jewish identity.

'Arek' was an enormous success, distributed by UNISON to every secondary school in the UK. In 2005 it won the award for Best International Documentary at the Miami International Film and Video Festival and was screened at the New York equivalent.

The essence of the film was the need to respect Human Rights and to show that by emphasising the story of one person rather than the complicated politics of the Nazi era.
